Actuary of the future: Vathani Waran

Open-access content Thursday 29th November 2012

Vathani Waran of JLT Investment Consulting

2

Employer and area of work

JLT Investment Consulting

How would your best friend describe you?

'Warm, kind and energetic'. I've also been told I should do stand-up; I am not convinced!

What motivates you?

'Being better'. I have just completed a masters at Cass Business School, a week's tennis academy (last week) and am now taking 'improvers' swimming lessons.

What would be your personal motto?

'Yes I can'. If you believe you can achieve, you will.

Name five dream guests you would invite to a dinner party?

Usain Bolt, Will Smith, Lady Gaga, Prince Harry, George Alagiah. The first two for their coolness, Gaga and Harry for the entertainment and George as a fellow countryman.

What's your most 'actuarial' habit?

I double check everything. I believe this to be actuarial rather than OCD.

Favourite Excel function?

Goal seek - it's the most fun-sounding function.

How do you relax away from the office?

Yoga, my attempts at swimming, and any chance to be by the sea - preferably with the sun shining. Alternative career choice? TV news presenter… 10 o'clock with George, of course.

Tell us something unusual about yourself

I won BBC Talent 'Music Masters' and worked at Radio 1 for 12 months. While I was there I wrote and produced a documentary that was aired. I was also interviewed to be a CBBC presenter.

Greatest risks ever taken?

Leaving my career and exams for Trevor Nelson's Radio 1 show.

What's your most treasured possession?

My smart phone, we are never separated.

What are your top three things to achieve in your lifetime?

Qualify, qualify, qualify.

If you ruled the world, what would you change first?

Freedom for all with good governance.
