Actuary of the future: Adrian Stamp

Open-access content Wednesday 22nd August 2012 — updated 5.13pm, Wednesday 29th April 2020

When Adrian Stamp isn't hacking away at Excel spreadsheets, he enjoys training on the track and a few tequilas.

2
Employer and area of work
Towers Watson, retirement.

How would your best friend describe you?
Wait! Actuaries are allowed to have friends?

What motivates you?
I hate losing - especially to Excel.

What would be your personal motto?
When life gives you lemons, grab the tequila and salt.

Who do you most admire and why?
My parents for being excellent role models, dedicating their lives to raising my brother, sister and me, and also dragging me kicking and screaming through my education.

What's your most 'actuarial' habit?

I put everything into a spreadsheet, just for the sake of it.

How do you relax away from the office?
Running on an athletics track or jumping in a sandpit - if you can call that relaxation.

Alternative career choice?

A professional athlete, preferably training somewhere tropical, with a beach.
Tell us something unusual about yourself I actually knew what an actuary was before meeting one.

Greatest risk you have ever taken?
Either leaving job applications to a month-and-a-half before I ran out of rent money, or appearing in 'Actuary of the future'. A certain person - whose name begins with 'N' and ends in 'adine' - is so passionate about this section, and got so excited when I said I was appearing in it, that she has told all her friends to look out for this article.

What's your most treasured possession?

My calculator, of course.

If you ruled the world, what would you change first?
I would renegotiate trade agreements to eliminate starvation, with bonus food to anyone who doesn't think that an actuary uses a bow and arrow.
