Actuary of the future: Gareth Evison

Open-access content Tuesday 29th May 2012

After trying his hand at fishing, JLT’s Gareth Evison traded in his tackle for a promising career as an actuary

31 MAY 2012 | THE ACTUARY TEAM
Gareth Evison JLT
Employer and area of work
JLT Benefit Solutions, employee benefits.

How would your best friend describe you?
Hmm, some of their responses were unprintable, but funny, sarcastic, generous and annoyingly tidy cropped up.

What motivates you?
Anyone who shows a complete dedication to what they want to achieve.

What would be your personal motto?
Working in pensions tends to make you think about planning for the future, but I think it's important to live for the moment.

Who do you most admire and why?
It's a bit of a cliché, but my parents. They always seem to have an answer to any problem, even when I don't ask for it.

What's your most 'actuarial' habit?
I think I'm quite shrewd (not tight!) and calculated financially. This is a good trait to have with one daughter and another on the way!

How do you relax away from the office?

I would like to say watching Everton play, but that's rarely a relaxing experience. I also enjoy spending time with my family - watching Mickey Mouse cartoons with my daughter is a great way to avoid studying at the weekend.

Alternative career choice?

A tattoo artist. I'm hopeless at anything artistic, but if I could tattoo myself I would save a fortune.

Tell us something unusual about yourself
When I was 17 I came 10th in the World Freshwater Fishing Championships, while representing Wales.

Greatest risk you have ever taken?
I sold my own fishing tackle retail business to join the actuarial profession. It was definitely a risk worth taking.

What's your most treasured possession?
An Everton football signed by all the 92/93 season team - a very rare item!

If you ruled the world, what would you change first?
I would make all trains run on time.
