Actuary of the future: Christopher Apps

Open-access content 27th April 2012

Christopher Apps of Guy Carpenter can adapt to any situation. It could be something to do with his liking for lycra

Employer and area of work
Guy Carpenter & Company Ltd; reinsurance

How would your best friend describe you?
Committed and outgoing, if perhaps a little crazy.

What motivates you?
Implementing solutions to complex problems by serving others and organisations larger than myself.

What would be your personal motto?
Always have an objective with an underlying principle.

Who do you most admire and why?
Mahatma Gandhi - for bringing 300 million people from political domination to freedom without the use of guns, knives or violence of any form.

What's your most 'actuarial' habit?
Using ratios to the point of obsession. This week, I'm aiming for an 80% laundry ratio (don't ask).

How do you relax away from the office?
Picking a London landmark on Google maps and running to it. This has, however, led to me finding myself severely lost on occasion.

Alternative career choice?
Teaching, or being the guy that does the voiceover for movie trailers.

Tell us something unusual about yourself
I procrastinate during my revision and memorise all the countries in the world and their capitals, all US states, all UK counties, and every element in the periodic table.

Greatest risk you have ever taken?
Using a rope-swing that probably wasn't intended for a 17-year-old in an attempt to cross a river. Gravity can be very punishing.

What's your most treasured possession?
A well-worn lycra all-in-one from my rowing days. I'm too fat to fit into it now!

If you ruled the world, what would you change first?
I'd find a way to make the internet free for all, and do so.
