Thinking short and long

Open-access content Wednesday 6th October 2021
Authors
Stephen Mann

As our members – and indeed the world –  face the unique challenges posed by climate change, the IFoA recognises its unique responsibility to support members with the challenges of today and the future. Navigating this new world requires new thinking and, over the past year, you have told us what would make a positive difference for you. We have listened.

Thinking differently

You’ve told us how important it is that we, as a body, demonstrate our investment in the public interest – and our refreshed thought leadership programme was born. We now move that thinking forward with ‘The Road to Glasgow: IFoA’s Sustainability Thought Leadership Series’. Launched in September, this series is designed to help influence the wider financial sector and society to drive greater ambition and progress against national and global sustainability targets.

You’ve told us that a premium qualification and career-long learning is a key part of your membership journey, and we’ve launched a Sustainability and Climate Risk ‘short course’ to provide you with a meaningful opportunity to enhance your skills in this regard.

And you’ve told us that in this ‘digital first’ world, your online member experience needs to be seamless and worthwhile. We’ve taken meaningful steps to improve this, including making all IFoA online events free to access for members, moving exams fully online, and preparing to launch a new IFoA website in the first half of 2022. Having events online gives us a much bigger audience reach, which is now at record levels. They’re better for the environment, too.

There is more to come in the months ahead; your needs continue to drive our change, and, as our members face challenges, in sustainability and beyond, we remain here to support you today and in the future.

Finding our voice

We want our members to have rewarding and fulfilling careers. There is no set ‘landing zone’ for this, but underpinning our approach is the belief that the best thing we can do is ensure actuaries have a vision for the future, a growth mindset, and the knowledge that we will help them develop the skillsets and learning they need.

Stepping forward as actuaries

At the beginning of next month, the United Nations will continue its custom of convening nearly every country for a global climate change summit. This year’s Conference of Parties – the UN’s 26th, and thus known as COP26 – gets underway in Glasgow, Scotland, on 1 November, and is where world leaders will strive to tackle the uniquely urgent challenges in sustainability today.

A team effort

My two-year term at the helm of the magazine is nearly up, and as with every editor before me, there have been great challenges to face; however, these give the best rewards.

Consider careers further afield

Welcome to the November issue of The Actuary. This month I interview Sid Malik about the non-traditional role of the actuary as a regulator in a central bank (p13), as part of the magazine’s support for actuaries considering wider fields and developing the skills they might need for successful careers in a changing world.

Enhancing our learning

One of the IFoA’s many roles is to help our members achieve their potential. In a changing world, we can support you as you develop the skills, competencies and mindsets you need for successful, fulfilling and sustainable careers.

Longevity and morbidity risk webinar series

In the August issue of The Actuary, the article ‘Mapping out Mortality’ explained the recent work on the new Longevity Index for England (LIFE) app, developed as part of the Actuarial Research Centre’s (ARC) programme ‘Modelling, Measurement and Management of Longevity and Morbidity Risk’. A series of in-depth webinars on this topic are available free to view on demand.

Meaningful change

When the IFoA launched its latest strategy in early 2020, we also launched a fresh organisational purpose: to be the voice of actuaries, and to support, develop and be the voice of our members.

Meaningful leadership

When the IFoA was formed in 2010, our two predecessor bodies agreed the governance arrangements that we retain today: an elected governing Council, a Management Board that bridges our organisation’s strategy and operations, and an Executive that advances the IFoA day by day.

Make it rewarding

I am often asked, ‘What is the point of the IFoA?’ I usually reply that our role is to enable our members and future members to have professionally and personally rewarding careers and to feel part of a professional community that is making a difference.
