Derek Cribb sets out a global vision for the future that values members wherever they are
31 MAY 2012 | DEREK CRIBB

If I were to tell you that over half of the students and roughly one-third of the Fellows of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries were based outside the UK, would it come as a surprise? Whether you are reading this in Mumbai or Manchester, you are part of a truly global community of members and it is vital that we as your professional body are meeting your varied and evolving needs.
In line with the Profession's strategy, we have been working hard to become more international in our approach. This means that the themes of accessibility and equivalence will underline everything we do.
As we develop new services for our members, the ability to deliver them beyond the traditional London and Edinburgh centres is now a key part of the design stage. Where it is not possible to provide exactly the same services, we will aim to ensure that equivalent services are available instead. This will involve using new technologies to improve all members' access to the Profession. It may take some time, but we are committed to achieving this goal.
Much of our work on accessibility and equivalence will also benefit UK members, as we will be increasing the level of service available. Our aim is to make every member feel valued wherever they are based, offering the full spectrum of support that members expect and deserve. The number of international member interest groups is increasing, and I would urge you to get involved with your local network.
We want to open up opportunities for Institute and Faculty members worldwide, so we will continue to extol the value of the Institute and Faculty brand in key global markets. We will also work closely with the International Actuarial Association and Groupe Consultatif to ensure that your views are represented.
Of course, members of the presidential team play a key role in promoting the Profession around the world. As we look forward to welcoming Philip Scott to the role of president, I would like to thank Jane Curtis for all the work she has undertaken this year. Much of what we have achieved would not have come to fruition without her guiding hand. I, and indeed all of our members, owe her a great deal of thanks.
