Actuaries have long been involved in private medical insurance and in financial planning for the NHS. However, the Health and Care practice area is wider than this, and many work within it without realising. The practice area covers products such as critical illness and LTC, and topics such as mental wellbeing, and asks how actuarial work can help restructure the welfare state so that it meets the population's needs.
The Health and Care Board is a member-led board run by volunteer actuaries, advising the IFoA on health and care issues. We are currently looking for new members with fresh ideas and a passion for developing the Health and Care practice area. We are also seeking volunteers for the Health and Care Lifelong Learning Sub-committee, which oversees all education and continuing professional development needs.
I'd encourage anyone who would like to contribute to consider volunteering. It's an opportunity to help shape a cross-practice area that touches on life, pensions, risk management, and resource and environment. Full details can be found at bit.ly/23JRCTb
