Robert Tudor Grey Hails FIA graduated from Pembroke College, Cambridge with a degree in engineering, before doing an MSc in operational research at Birmingham. His actuarial career started with Duncan C Fraser in 1974; he progressed to Watsons in 1985, being made a partner in 1987. He was a model professional, working tirelessly for his clients while mentoring those who worked for him.
Robert soon became involved in professional affairs, initially on the SIAS committee; he became its treasurer, and returned later as chairman. He proceeded to sit on various Institute committees and working parties, and was elected to Council in 2003. He was the first honorary treasurer of the merged IFoA and a member of the Management Board from its creation in 2008; he was given a President's Award in 2011. He was Chair of the Trustees of the IFoA Staff Pension Scheme from 2011 to 2017, and also chaired the recent Pensions Resource and Environment working party, continuing his contribution well past his retirement in 2011.
Robert was an active member of the Worshipful Company of Actuaries, becoming a Liveryman in 2012 and Court Assistant in 2016. His generosity extended outside of the profession, too: he was a governor at Reigate College and chair of governors at Coulsdon Sixth Form College. In his spare time, Robert enjoyed sailing and playing golf.
Robert died on 12 June 2018, aged 67. He is survived by his wife, three children and a grandchild.
