A student perspective

Open-access content Wednesday 5th September 2018 — updated 5.50pm, Wednesday 29th April 2020

Building on the success of the Professional Bodies Forum of Scotland, the Faculty of Actuaries Students Society (FASS) has reached out to similar organisations within other professions, to arrange joint events specifically aimed at younger members.

This has focused on engaging with those at the early stages of their careers, whilst still being aligned with those of the Professional Bodies Forum.

Our events to date have involved groups such as the Scottish Young Lawyers Association (SYLA), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and the Property Litigation Association (PLA). The latest joint presentation, hosted by FASS and the SYLA, related to cyber risk. Our speakers were Vassilis Manoussos of the Cyber Academy at Napier University, and Gerard Grant, chief ethical hacker at the Scottish Business Resilience Centre. They prepared (and scared!) us on the types of cyber-crimes that companies could face in the current digital age.

We have also hosted a number of joint social events. The latest was our Christmas drinks event, which enticed over 100 attendees to come and enjoy mulled wine while finding out more about what each profession does. Our new friends now know that actuaries can do more than just tell you when you're going to die!

We have turned our sights on organising the next joint event and maintaining the relationships we have built over the past couple of years.

If you wish to hear more about the Professional Bodies Forum of Scotland please contact Catherine Thorn, or to hear about FASS contact Craig Ritchie ([email protected]).
