The Worshipful Company of Actuaries held its annual Livery Lecture at London's Staple Inn, the home of the actuarial profession, on the evening of 22 November 2017.

Over 50 Livery Company masters attended and we were all thoroughly entertained by a talk from Sir David Spiegelhalter OBE FRS, Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at the University of Cambridge. Spiegelhalter is also the current president of the Royal Statistical Society and an honorary Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. The title of his talk was 'Dodgy data in the news: how to spot it and how to stop it'. He showed many examples of how the press misrepresents statistics from research, and the whole audience was enthralled by the presentation.

The lecture was followed by a delicious supper and an opportunity to put questions to Spiegelhalter. This event, which was sponsored by Aon plc, continues to be very popular among the Livery community and all masters are impressed by the architecture of Staple Inn.
