We held our most recent Council meeting across dual locations - London and Mumbai - as 19 Council members travelled to India for a trip coinciding with the Global Conference of Actuaries (GCA), the largest annual gathering of actuarial professionals in South Asia.

The Council members also took part in a full week of engagements in both Mumbai and Delhi, including visits to a range of employers, a briefing from the local High Commission, and member events in both cities. A particular highlight was the presentation of new qualifier awards by president Marjorie Ngwenya.

India is home to the second largest group of IFoA members, so it was fantastic to spend time with these members, as well as the leadership of the Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI). We are grateful to the IAI for its generous hosting and hospitality at the GCA.

At the Council meeting itself, we discussed the IFoA's strategy and how it might affect the actuarial profession over the next 20 years. We agreed this requires further consideration.

We received an update on the project to expand the IFoA's Quality Assurance Scheme outside the UK, and debated how to extend the global reach of our membership while maintaining the integrity of our qualifications. We were also updated on enhanced monitoring of our UK members' actuarial work. That discussion emphasised the need for an effective but proportionate system of monitoring, which is supported by our members and key regulatory authorities.

We also approved the IFoA's new governance structure, plus a proposal to review our future approach to formally recognising other qualifications.

The fourth Council meeting of the sessional year will be held on 23 May, and there will be an extraordinary meeting on 19 March to consider proposed changes to the IFoA's qualification framework. The president-elect elections will also take place that afternoon.
