SIAS dinner: roaring 20s

On 17 November, 700 actuaries and their guests visited the Tower of London for the sell-out 2017 SIAS Annual Dinner. For this extravaganza, SIAS took us back to the 1920s with the theme ‘Party like Gatsby’. The reception cocktails, champagne, popcorn, and the amazing saxophone player, built up the anticipation for the evening ahead.

The main hall looked spectacular. Set just inside the walls of the Tower, it offered an illuminated view of the main building and a real feel for the grandeur of the setting.

Entertainment was provided during dinner by a Gatsby troupe The Wild Tonics, who never failed to keep the guests on their toes, providing a 1920s twist to a range of modern songs. In addition, there was a charity raffle on the night, with an array of prizes on offer kindly sponsored by various companies and recruiters; we raised almost £400 for the London Air Ambulance.

After dessert, the dance floor opened up and the reception area was converted into Jay Gatsby’s gaming arcade, where guests could try their luck at some roulette or blackjack. SIAS even laid out a giant eight-lane Scalextric track, which had been trialled by racing driver Lewis Hamilton himself. Those who were still going at midnight joined the after-party at the Abbey Bar. We look forward to seeing you at the 2018 annual dinner!
