Changes to CPD exemptions

Open-access content Monday 1st August 2016 — updated 5.50pm, Wednesday 29th April 2020

If you are planning on taking an extended period of leave from work, you may be interested to learn about the recent changes to the exemptions system made under the 2016/2017 continuing professional development (CPD) scheme.

If you are planning on taking an extended period of leave from work, you may be interested to learn about the recent changes to the exemptions system made under the 2016/2017 continuing professional development (CPD) scheme.

Category 1 members

For the first time, members in Category 1 are eligible to complete a reduced amount of CPD if they are absent for more than three consecutive months.

Members granted this partial exemption must complete a number of hours of CPD over two consecutive CPD years, depending on the length of absence.

Find out more by downloading the 2016/2017 CPD scheme from bit.ly/29vEUTg. Section 11.1.1 explains how the rules will apply.

Members in Categories 2 and 4

We listened when you told us that the partial exemption offered to members in Categories 2 and 4 had a different effect depending on how the absence interacted with the CPD year.

We have taken steps to make the system apply more fairly to all by making the partial exemption available to any Category 2 or 4 member who is absent from work for more than three consecutive months.

It doesn't matter if those months fall over two CPD years - the exemption can apply to both years, so long as you are absent for at least one month in each. Again, the number of hours you will need to complete will depend on the length of your absence. Read section 11.2.2 of the CPD scheme for more details.

To apply for an exemption, please submit a written request to [email protected] Then complete and return the application for CPD exemption. Once granted, we can confirm your requirements for the year.
