'Rave reviews' for Health and Care Conference

Open-access content Tuesday 29th May 2012

More than 175 delegates and speakers attended The Health and Care Conference 2012 at the Hilton Deansgate Manchester in May.

The three-day event provided delegates with fresh insights into the health protection industry, with plenary lectures and topical workshops sessions to choose from.

In the long-term care panel debate, delegates heard professionals give their perspectives on where the industry should be heading. Jules Constantinou of Gen Re followed up this talk in a workshop session with Dan Read of Partnership Assurance, entitled 'Implications for the industry of the government's white paper on social care'. This workshop received rave reviews from delegates.

Other highlights included: 'Around the world in 15 distribution models' by Greg Becker of RGA; 'The evolution of predictive underwriting' by Jonathan Hughes of Munich Re; and 'Changing the patient journey through open referrals' by Adrian Baskir of Bupa. The presentations will on the Profession's website from early June (www.actuaries.org.uk).

The Monastery (pictured) was the stunning venue for the Conference gala dinner, kindly sponsored by Munich Re. Nigel Jones, president of the North West Actuarial Society, welcomed guests and urged them to find out more about joining their local actuarial society. The welcome dinner was sponsored by KPMG.

Jane Curtis, president of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, commented: "This year's conference was excellent for those working in health protection - a close-knit community of people who thrive on interaction and the opportunity to debate the issues of the day. The conference theme of 'putting the customer first' was a great choice, which also allowed everyone to look ahead at changes in the industry."

Sue Elliott, chair of the Health and Care Practice Executive Committee and the Professional Executive Committee, agreed that the conference provided an excellent opportunity to network with other healthcare actuaries in a relaxed and informal setting, offering a balance between technical content and less formal social activities. "I can recommend this as a 'must attend' event for all healthcare actuaries," she added.
