Cowling heads to Windermere for marathon challenge

Open-access content Wednesday 9th May 2012 — updated 5.13pm, Wednesday 29th April 2020

The Worshipful Company of Actuaries’ junior warden, Charles Cowling, has challenged himself to run his first marathon with an added incentive.

Any sponsorship money raised will be matched pound for pound by his employer, JLT Group.

For his debut run, Cowling, pictured, has chosen the Windermere Marathon on 20 May. The event is organised by the Brathay Trust in Ambleside and is regarded as one of the most scenic marathons in the UK.

Set in the Lake District, it is far from a flat route, with much of the course winding around Lake Windermere - not the easiest of challenges for a first marathon.

Cowling will be raising funds for the Company of Actuaries Charitable Trust, and one of the ultimate beneficiaries of the money raised will be organiser the Brathay Trust, a charity for young people working with disadvantaged youths in communities around the UK. Brathay specialises in engaging and inspiring young people, many of whom are experiencing difficulties with their lives.

It supports young people's personal and social development, critical awareness, aspirations and life chances. The trust's work has four key aims:
- Reducing offending and anti-social behaviour.
- Improving learning, attainment and employability.
- Increasing wellbeing and empowerment for young people in need.
- Improving communities and meeting local needs.
