First Actuarial hires duo for investment and pension task

Open-access content Friday 30th December 2011 — updated 7.38pm, Wednesday 6th May 2020

First Actuarial has announced two actuarial appointments in the areas of investment and pensions...

Mike Smaje has joined as director of investment services in the firm's Leeds office. He was previously a senior investment consultant and actuary with Towers Watson, and has 19 years' industry experience.

First Actuarial founder, Michael Hulme-Vickerstaff, said the appointment would help the firm meet growing demand for its investment services.

Meanwhile, Neal Thompson has joined the company's actuarial consultancy team in Peterborough.

Mr Thompson has particular experience in advising housing employers on their pension arrangements and First Actuarial anticipates a number of challenges in this area.

"The next two to three years will see an unprecedented raft of pension-related changes for housing employers," said founder Peter Shellswell, who heads the firm's housing team.

"For example, the results of the 2011 valuation of the Social Housing Pension Scheme, yet more changes to the Local Government Pension Scheme and, of course, the challenges brought about by auto-enrolment".
