IFoA Foundation: Making a global difference

Open-access content Wednesday 1st December 2021

Supporting the IFoA Foundation’s work is a great way to give back this Christmas

Ringing the changes on skillset requirements

The IFoA Foundation is committed to ensuring that support is available to aspiring student actuaries who may require financial support during their studies, wherever they are based.

The Education Grant can help finance:

  •  IFoA membership fees

  •  IFoA examination or exemption fees

  •  Study materials for IFoA examinations

  •  Some support with the cost of attending university.

The Foundation in action

Moez Abeidi is studying in the UK, having left war-torn Libya in 2014 to pursue his ambition of becoming an actuary. Studying for a master’s in maths, operational research, statistics and economics (actuarial and financial mathematics) at the University of Warwick, Moez has had promising results so far, and sought financial help from the IFoA Foundation to help towards his costs so he could completely commit to his intense studies.

“I chose the IFoA Foundation for support as I had become aware of the work they do, and how they help aspiring actuaries achieve their goals,” he says.

“I will benefit from the education hardship grant as I will be able to complete my education and start working as an actuary.

“I received financial help for my costs for my final year at the University of Warwick. Without this help I would have had to take a year out or work part time. Both options would have negatively affected my academic performance.

The fund ensured that I am able to complete my final year and thus secure a graduate job working as an actuary, where I hope to bear the fruits of my labour and the investment put in me.

“This funding will ensure I can complete my university education, qualify and start working as an actuary. I believe the sooner I can stand on my own feet, the sooner I will be able to give back to my community and to everyone who helped me get to where I aspire to be.

“This funding is a big help and motivation to become a successful actuary. The IFoA Foundation was very supportive throughout my application process, and I am very grateful for all their help.

“I hope one day to get to a point where I can help the IFoA Foundation in helping other actuarial students become actuaries.”

Lyndon Jones, a trustee of the IFoA Foundation who deals with these grants said: “We are delighted to have been able to support Moez and others. It’s clear from feedback that students are extremely grateful for the support that definitely makes a difference in their lives.”

“The fund ensured that I was able to complete my final year”

Giving back

The Foundation’s mission is ‘Actuaries supporting others’, and it is wonderful to see that Moez is already considering how he can give back as a successful actuary to help those following in his footsteps. It is this ‘giving back’ culture that we hope to encourage within the actuarial community, now and in the future.

We are only able to offer student actuaries such as Moez the chance at financial assistance thanks to the generosity of existing actuaries who are committed to supporting our aims.

This December, could you make a difference to the life of someone like Moez by contributing to the IFoA Foundation? A generous donation of £208 could help to pay the IFoA admission fee and a year’s membership subscription entrance fee for a student in financial hardship. What an amazing Christmas gift for a future actuary.

The IFoA Foundation (bit.ly/IFoA_Foundation) is the dedicated charitable arm of the IFoA, and works with the global actuarial community to meet a set of philanthropic objectives for positive societal impact.

Thanks to our generous partners and supporters, in our first year we delivered impact across a range of grant activities. For example, we reached 40 student actuaries in East Africa with an e-learning project in partnership with the Actuarial Academy of East Africa, gave 13 educational grants to students experiencing financial hardship across the globe, awarded 35 prizes and awards to those at the cutting edge of the profession, and launched scholarship funds in three global regions that will give opportunity to 50 of the most talented and deserving actuarial students during the next 12 months.

To make a donation, please visit bit.ly/IFoA_Donate or contact [email protected] We wish all our supporters and beneficiaries across the globe a happy and healthy festive season, and all the best for 2022.

New world, new thinking: CERA seminar online

In February this year we launched our first online Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA) seminar. After years of holding successful and popular seminars in a face-to-face setting (predominantly in the UK), the COVID-19 pandemic compelled us to revisit the format of these events in order to continue meeting members’ needs.
