The Actuary The magazine of the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries

It was pleasing to see a positive mention of Wikipedia, the online encyclopædia, in the ‘Internet power tools’ article in May’s issue of The Actuary. The idea of wikis might seem rather suspect when first encountered, but Wikipedia in particular has been a fantastic example of how powerful (if potentially dangerous; the article doesn’t mention the relentless vandalism that wikis attract) the unrestricted pooling of knowledge can be. On a side note, I think this the best time to point out that the Wikipedia ‘actuary’ article is in need of some non-American actuarial input, and so for anyone looking to practise their new wiki-editing skills, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actuary is the place to go.
