Masters’ Eastern promise

Institute president Nigel Masters visited China and Hong Kong in March to meet with students and new fellows. Mr Masters visited Central University for Finance and Economics (CUFE) in Beijing and the Shanghai University for Finance and Economics in China and spoke at an Actuarial Society of Hong Kong meeting and to students at Hong Kong University.

Past-president Chris Daykin accompanied him to his engagements. The visit marked almost 17 years since the suggestion of cooperation between the Institute and CUFE to deliver an actuarial programme in China was discussed at a meeting at Staple Inn.

More than 200 students have studied actuarial science at CUFE since the programme was established, of whom 120 have obtained the Diploma in Actuarial Techniques and at least 50 have gained the Certificate of Finance and Investment. Sixteen former students of CUFE have become fellows of the Institute.

In his speeches to students and new fellows, Mr Masters spoke about the future of the Profession and the impact of the current turbulence in financial markets.
