General Insurance Board news

Countdown to GIRO

There is now only one month to go before GIRO at Newport. At the time of writing there are some places still available. You can book online at http://wam.actuaries.org.uk/wam/conferencebooking.exe. The main convention hotel, the Celtic Manor Resort, is fully booked but the convention brochure gives alternatives. The brochure is at www.actuaries.org.uk/files/pdf/cpd/giro2007.pdf

GI ROC – General Insurance Reserving Oversight Committee

GI ROC’s four work streams will each be presenting updates at the GIRO convention. The committee has also prepared a discussion paper on Quantification and Reporting of Uncertainty for GI Reserving. This is available on the website at www.actuaries.org.uk/Display_Page.cgi?url=/general_insurance/giroc_tor.html. I would encourage all reserving actuaries to read this paper. Your views are sought and valued and can be raised either at GIRO or by contacting the GIB secretary, Peter Stirling, email peter.stirling@actuaries.org.uk

Education and CPD

The board is overseeing a review of the current ST exam. Thanks are due to all those who are helping with this major task. We expect a first draft of core reading units from our many volunteers by mid-September. As GRIT recommended, we will be holding a two-day stochastic reserving seminar at Staple Inn on 29–30 November. Numbers are limited for this highly interactive meeting. Please contact Peter Stirling for more details.

New CAS journal

The Casualty Actuarial Society has launched a new academic journal, Variance: Advancing the Science of Risk. More details are available at www.VarianceJournal.org. Its peer-reviewed articles focus on original, practical, and theoretical research in non-life actuarial science and related areas in the science of risk. The inaugural issue includes articles on diverse topics such as risk-transfer testing of reinsurance products, extended service contracts, mortgage insurance, financial modelling, and loss-reserve estimates.
