University of Kent Actuarial Careers Fair 2009

On Wednesday 2nd December 2009, the Invicta Actuarial Society, part of the University of Kent, hosted an Actuarial Careers Fair at the Canterbury Innovation Centre. The fair was organised by a group of undergraduates from the University of Kent studying Actuarial Science at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science (SMSAS).

The aim of the event was to give students the opportunity to speak to employers and create awareness of the opportunities available within different sectors of the actuarial profession. We were very pleased to have support from the following employers:
>> Barnett Waddingham
>> Deloitte
>> First Actuarial
>> Financial Ombudsman Service
>> Legal & General
>> Mercer
>> Saga
>> SunGard
>> UBS
>> Watson Wyatt

The SMSAS also manned a stand alongside these companies to promote postgraduate studies and a CV vetting service provided by a professional actuary from the academic staff with previous experience in the industry.

Despite the bad weather, the event attracted more than 200 students from the following faculties:
>> Business School
>> Law School
>> School of Computing
>> School of Economics
>> School of Engineering
>> School of Physical Science

Feedback received from the students was very positive. The event has provided them with the chance to speak with the actuaries in the industry, exposing them to the different roles an actuary plays in the real business world. This allows them to have a better understanding of their future career.

The members of the organising committee are: Wei Lun Wong, Rachel Farrugia, Katie Buckley, Neil Cox, Angeline Siang Ling Yap, Nikki Edwards and Ram Lidder. As the organisers of the event, we worked under tight time constraints. However with the support of Invicta Actuarial Society, we managed to overcome many challenges such as funding issues, venue availability, contacting employers, marketing the event, and managing costs in addition to our existing study commitments.

Finally, we would like to give thanks to the following people for their invaluable time and support to make this a successful event.
>> Jo Clark at The Canterbury Innovation Centre
>> Tracy Crowther at Kent Innovation & Enterprise
>> Sue Hopkinson at University of Kent International Office
>> Lecturers and non-academic staff in SMSAS
>> Employers and students who attended the event.

Arrangements for the ’University of Kent Actuarial Career Fair 2010’ will be underway shortly. We will endeavour to build on last year’s success.
