Global métiers

I couldn’t fail to be impressed by the glossiness of the brochure advertising the 2006 international congress that arrived today. If only, I thought, my employer would pay for me and my wife – or my accompanying person in current jargon – to attend such a jamboree. Closer inspection, however, made me wish that the francophone organisers had given the job of translating the brochure to someone whose first language was English. I was concerned in particular by the reference to ‘the evolution of our industry’. We are, surely, a profession not an industry? Yes, indeed, if our French is up to it – the other half of the brochure uses the phrase nos métiers. But why the plural? Am I not a member of a single global métier?
