I was a walking time-bomb!

The story of actuary Ben Rickayzen’s brush with death in 2005 featured in the Daily Mail of 27 December. Mr Rickayzen lost his spleen in a relatively minor accident in 1982, but the consequences came to haunt him only in the past year when he nearly died because of blood poisoning. The risk could have been largely avoided if he had been more definitively advised of the need for a daily dose of penicillin. Ben Rickayzen told his story to the Mail in support of the efforts of the Splenectomy Trust, which offers advice on living without this sometimes vital organ.
