A chief investment officer (p42), a property surveyor and a tax professional (p40) walk into a bar – and they are all actuaries.
Welcome to this special ‘wider fields’ issue of The Actuary, and the 2022 season finale. One of the best things about being editor this year has been connecting with so many of you and hearing your different insights and stories, and that has been especially true when preparing this issue.
In addition, Bradley Shearer and Helena Ingram share some practical advice as careers professionals (p34), and Catrin Townsend offers her thoughts on how to answer that perennial and difficult question, “what do you do?” (p30).
For the interview, I speak with Tim Harford (p14), seeking words of wisdom from a self-described “nerd communicator”. This seems particularly helpful for those of us running an actuarial magazine, but is really pertinent to all of us – nerd or not!
This issue marks the end of my tenure as editor. I would like to thank the volunteer features team, and the IFoA and Redactive teams, for their invaluable support. Thank you also to the contributors and interviewees, without whom there would be no magazine, and to you, the readers, for your engagement and comments. I look forward to stepping back to the features team and working with the next editor.
I hope you enjoy this issue, and early seasonal greetings.
