Actuaries supporting others: Your membership, your charity

te

It’s just two years since the IFoA Foundation launched, but it is already making a difference to talented and ambitious young people around the world, helping them surmount financial barriers that could prevent them from becoming actuaries.

The Foundation’s education grants and scholarships are making IFoA membership and actuarial study accessible to promising students from all backgrounds, putting them on the journey to qualification and welcoming them into our vibrant global community.

Our funding is helping to support fun projects that promote maths in schools across the UK, as well as role-modelling initiatives that are helping to raise the expectations of gifted pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds and increase awareness of actuarial careers. “We’re demonstrating how the generosity of the profession can open doors for the next generation and empower them to pursue a life-changing career,” says IFoA Foundation chair Kartina Tahir Thomson.

The Foundation relies on the generosity of IFoA members to fund its work, so we’ve made it easier to give; when you renew your membership subscription online, you will be offered the option of donating.

“The IFoA Foundation offers all members a practical and effective way to make a difference, helping those less advantaged on the journey to a career like yours,” says IFoA CEO Stephen Mann.

“We want to ensure that no one is deterred from becoming an actuary due to their financial situation,” says IFoA president Matt Saker. “One of the cornerstones of the IFoA Foundation’s mission is ‘Actuaries supporting others’. When you come to renew your membership, please consider donating in the knowledge that you will be helping someone else fulfil their potential.”

To donate when you renew your membership, log on and visit My Account, Invoices and click ‘Donate to the Foundation’. You can donate at any time via Paypal bit.ly/IFoAGiving, or contact Lindsey Berthoud, general manager of the IFoA Foundation, at [email protected]. You can also follow the IFoA Foundation on Linkedin.

While I enjoyed each article individually, together the four ‘risk’ articles in the August 2022 issue of The Actuary, plus the risk management board piece, really disturbed me. It wasn’t the articles themselves, but the overall perception that they gave together
