To the Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty

Open-access content Wednesday 6th July 2022

The President, Council and members of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in the UK, the Commonwealth and across the world most respectfully offer to your Majesty our heartfelt congratulations on your Platinum Jubilee.

The actuarial profession, through both the Institute of Actuaries and its Royal Charter granted in 1884, and the Faculty of Actuaries and its Royal Charter granted in 1868, is proud of its role in serving the public, and in particular playing its part to ensure the financial security of the public as well as providing broader public service in tackling such challenges as climate change.

The Institute’s loyal address to Her Late Majesty Queen Victoria, on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee, highlighted the positive encouragement of financially ‘provident habits’, fostered by actuaries, which continue today. We thought it might be interesting to note the change in longevity over the course of your reign.

As higher living standards and improved medical care result in longer lives, our members continue to be at the forefront of helping to provide social policy needs such as saving opportunities, retirement benefits and health care while addressing intergenerational fairness.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries continues to grow and we now have over 32,000 members, many of whom practise professional skills outside the United Kingdom. Through the education and training of our members, we strive constantly to extend and improve knowledge of our science across the globe.

We humbly trust that your Majesty’s Jubilee celebrations prove to be a true recognition of the public service you have offered to the nation over the past 70 years.

Given under the Common Seal of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, 1 June 2022

A year of progress

This is my final column as president – I can’t believe the year has gone so quickly! It’s been a year of ups and downs, as COVID-19 has continued to be an influence, but I’d like to focus on the good things that will make it a year to remember for me.

Times a-changing for actuaries

During the past year or so I have spoken about how much the world, the actuarial profession and the IFoA have changed throughout my career. I’ve seen fax take over from telex, only to be displaced by email and the web. Instant messaging and video calls are normal, rather than sci-fi fantasies. Spreadsheets appeared, dominated, and now compete with more powerful data analytic tools. It really is a different world today, and yesterday’s skillset isn’t adequate to deal with it.
