Watson Wyatt lecture 2004

Many actuaries attended this year’s Watson Wyatt lecture given by Professor John Pigott at Cass Business School on 29 March. The lecture was introduced by Professor Steven Haberman of Cass and by Mike Orszag of Watson Wyatt. Adair Turner, chairman of the Pensions Commission, responded to the lecture before a question and answer session.

John Piggott is professor of economics and director of the Centre for Pensions and Superannuation at the University of New South Wales and has a deep knowledge of the development of compulsory superannuation funding in Australia. The lecture and discussion illustrated well that compulsion is by no means a panacea, and particularly the risk that poorly designed compulsion can come to be perceived as unfair.
