SIAS 5-a-side football

The ever popular annual 5-a-side tournament took place on Sunday 15 June and was a great success, with 20 teams battling it out for supremacy in the sweltering heat at Battersea Park.

The group stages were fiercely contested and in the end saw a number of upsets which included the winners for the past two years, Big Fat Marsh & Friends, crashing out in the preliminaries and so failing in their quest for a hat-trick of victories. They have announced their return for next year with the backing of Russian, Roman Abramovich.

The quarter finals came and went, continually draining the players of any energy that remained before the semis. In one semi-final, HBW overcame Dream Team in a tight 1–0 victory, which incidentally was the only goal they conceded all day. In the other semi-final, Higham Group B continued to add to their mass of goals (22 in six matches) to beat KPMG 2–1.

The final was a defensive performance from both sides, more through exhaustion than anything else. HBW scored an early goal through the speedy Richard Reid and then defended their territory in true Arsenal style. A fine save late on by the injured man of the match, Singers, proved crucial as HBW finished the game 1–0 – which saw them lift the prestigious title.

Following the tournament, the teams enjoyed food at a local pub to rehydrate over a few beverages and discuss, at length, tactics for next year’s tournament. All in all, the event once again came up trumps, helped enormously by the glorious sunshine.
