FASS pub quiz

On 23 October 2003 the Faculty of Actuaries Student Society held its first event of the year when members met for the annual pub quiz. The event was held at the Three Sisters Bar in Edinburgh and had an enthusiastic turn-out of members seeking to prove themselves as the next Bamber Gascoigne (or merely an improved replacement for John Humphrys).

With several teams quietly confident and one even boasting an ex-University Challenge contestant in their ranks, the evening got off to a competitive start. With many testing questions, those with the more superior grey matter were soon pruned from those more interested in killing their grey matter.

It was soon obvious that the quizmaster was an actuary with questions such as ‘What is the depth of the earth’s crust?’ rather than the usual ‘Name all the members of SClub7’.

At one point there was a demand for a steward’s inquiry when the FASS president changed the teams at the last minute so a former University Challenge contestant could join the Standard Life team. However, this was to no avail as a pensions consultancy team finally won in a photo finish. The winners deservedly picked up two bottles of Moët, with the runners-up receiving two bottles of wine.

The FASS committee would like to thank Kevin Telfer for acting as quizmaster for the evening.
