Faculty of Actuaries Student Society : Annual dinner dance

Caledonian Hilton, Edinburgh, Thursday 11 November 2004

‘One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.’ A Room of One’s Own, Virginia Woolf, English novelist (1882–1941)

This year the Faculty of Actuaries Student Society annual dinner takes place in the prestigious Caledonian Hilton Hotel in Edinburgh. The annual dinner is regarded as the major event of the year and has in the past been held in impressive hotels and provided a stage to many highly regarded guest speakers.

The Caledonian Hilton, which was built in 1903 and overlooks the famous 14th century Edinburgh Castle, is in a prime location for this year’s dinner. The dinner, which hopes to attract representatives from actuarial companies throughout the city, will play host to guests from the equivalent society in Glasgow and also to the main guest speaker Steve Bee, head of pension strategy at Scottish Life.

Steve, who is not an actuary, is one of the leading experts on pensions development in the UK today. He is a regular speaker at after-dinner events and has won a number of industry awards including Industry Personality of the Year in 2004. Other notable claims to fame include an appearance as a guest on the Jeremy Clarkson chat show. Steve has a strong interest in cartooning and achieved notoriety some years ago by becoming the only person ever to have submitted a paper in evidence to a Commons select committee in cartoon-strip format!

This year a choice of main meal will be offered so as to add some variety and to ensure that the dinner is enjoyed to the full. With the inclusion of a pre-dinner drinks reception and disco after the dinner, this promises to be a fantastic evening.
