SIAS table football

The SIAS table football tournament was held at Café Kick, near Farringdon, on Thursday 1 April and was a great success. Twelve teams were initially split into groups of three, each team playing each other twice, with the top two progressing through to the cup and the third-placed team through to the plate. All groups were equally contested and it was clearly evident that this year brought the highest standard of competition to date.

After a break for lunch involving plenty of discussion over tactics, the knockout stages began. The highlights included:

  • ‘Old Boys last hurrah’ – Brendan Brown and Sankar Mahalingham, who despite claiming to be the most ‘senior’ team, put in a gallant performance, losing to the eventual winners in one of the semi-finals.
  • ‘Dudes’ Oliver Jaegemann and James Mason pushing every game to the wire, eventually falling in the quarter finals; but then proceeding to compete against each other to see who the weakest link was – that ended in a draw!
  • Trevor Fannin and myself, entering as the 12th team to cover a non-entry, managed to scrap through to the semi-finals – after all, we couldn’t be seen to be winning it now, could we?

In the final of the plate, ‘Feel the Power’, Nick Gaywood and Mark Henderson, defeated ‘Katie & Amy’, Katie Low and Amy Urrestarazu, two games to one.

The cup final was contested between ‘Old School’, Dom Moret and Nick Harvey, and ‘Brass Balls’, Dominic Makemsom and Andrew Cooper – winners of the tournament in 2002; both teams being the only teams to progress through the group stages undefeated. Unsurprisingly, the final was close, with the games finishing 6/6, 7/5 and 7/5 in favour of Old School with Nick’s lighting reaction (must see it to believe it!) proving too quick up front and Dom providing solid support in defence and chipping in with some crucial long-range goals – worthy winners!

Thanks to everyone who turned up and help make it an enjoyable night.
