These concepts are of central importance to not only the financial planning process, but also investment strategy, product design and retirement planning.

Thursday 18 March
Poker night
Loose Cannon Club,
13-16 Allhallows Lane,
London,
EC4R 3UL
6pm

To bluff or not to bluff... that is the question! After the success of last year’s event, SIAS is hosting another poker night. No experience is needed. If you’re a beginner then you can take part in the practice sessions beforehand and, if you’re unlucky in the tournament, then you can carry on the fun by playing on other tables.

Beginners’ practice sessions start from 6pm and the main competition starts at 6.30pm. There will be cash prizes for everyone who makes it to the last table. There will be a bar open until late, and SIAS will be providing a buffet included in the ticket price of £23 for SIAS members (£30 for non-SIAS members). Places are limited and will be offered on a strict first come, first served basis.

Please e-mail James.Williamson@Barnett-Waddingham.co.uk to reserve your place.

Tuesday 13 April
Does your hedge do what it says on the tin?
Staple Inn,
Holborn,
London
5:30pm for 6pm start

The extreme market volatility in recent years has highlighted the importance to life companies and other investors of hedging market risks. However, the resulting dislocations in derivative markets have also cast doubt over the ability of hedges to perform as expected during times when they are most needed.

The authors — Scott Eason, William Diffey, Ross Evans, Paul Fulcher and Tim Wilkins — will present a paper looking at the economic effectiveness of common hedging strategies during both benign and stressed market conditions, and the implications for financial reporting.

There is no need to register in advance for this event. Refreshments will be available from 5:30pm for a 6pm start and, following the meeting, there will be a free drink and buffet at a nearby pub.
