Kiribati as spoken

The explanation of the pronunciation of the name ‘Kiribati’ (March 2003) reminds me of the old word game of how you pronounce the word ‘ghoti’. It dates from my schooldays and it never ceases to amaze me how my memory manages to recall all these useless bits of information, including a number of similar word games we used to play. And ‘ghoti’ is pronounced ‘fish’: gh as in ‘cough’, o as in ‘women’, and ti as in ‘station’.
