Five a-side football

The annual 5-a-side tournament took place on Sunday 20 June and was a great success, with 26 teams battling it out for supremacy at Powerleague, Catford, London.

The group stages consisted of six groups. Once again it proved very tight, with the caged environment bringing out more testosterone than in recent years. Big upsets in the early stages brought early showers for Watson Wyatt and KPMG.

A short break followed, allowing the SIAS organisers to draft the knockout stages and the teams to take shelter in the clubhouse from the torrential rain and grab some food from the buffet provided.

This was followed after the interval by the first round of knockout stages, the quarter-finals, semis, and final. Unfortunately, we had not seen the last of the rain, which caused havoc with puddles forming on many of the pitches – however, it did not dissuade the determined teams left in the knockout stages.

Both the semi-final games were close with last year’s winners, Hewitt Bacon & Woodrow, going through on penalties against Punter Southall Guildford, and Higham Flyers coming up trumps against Big gAims Players (PwC).

The final of this year’s SIAS 5-a-side was fought to the bitter end with Higham Flyers emerging victorious to regain the title from last year’s winners, Hewitt Bacon & Woodrow. Congratulations to the winning team (below) and indeed all teams that took part – hope to see you at next year’s 5-a-side tournament.

SIAS would particularly like to thank Trevor Fannin of Watson Wyatt for his help in running the event this year.
