FASS dinner 2003

This year the Faculty of Actuaries Student Society dinner was held in the Roxburghe Hotel in Edinburgh on 6 November 2003. Despite tough competition from the MTV Europe music awards, being held just down the road in Leith on the same evening, attendance was excellent. If anything, we had the trendier crowd.

After the champagne reception, those attending were treated to a delicious three-course meal and a trio of guest speakers.

First to speak was the current president of the Faculty of Actuaries, Tom Ross. Tom gave an entertaining and interesting speech on the future of the actuarial profession, specifically focusing on the increasingly diversified roles of actuaries throughout the financial sector.

Next up to speak was our own student society president, Richard McCullagh, followed by the Glasgow Actuarial Student Society secretary, Richard Payne. All three speakers combined a serious message with amusing anecdotes from their actuarial careers. This is the perfect opportunity to thank all of the speakers on behalf of the FASS committee for their welcome contribution to the evening.

After the dinner and the speeches it was time for the 190 dinner guests to let their hair down. Both the bar staff and the dance-floor were kept busy for the remainder of the evening. And, despite the distractions down in Leith and in Princes Street gardens, the night was a huge success. Well done to everyone involved!
