Faculty whisky-tasting in Paris

About 150 guests celebrated the Faculty of Actuaries’ 150th anniversary at a whisky-tasting at the International Congress of Actuaries (ICA) in Paris on 1 June. The tasting, sponsored by Diageo, was hosted by Stewart Ritchie, Faculty junior vice-president, and presented by Julian Hutchings, resplendent in full highland dress, who identified himself as the only professional whisky-taster in France (visit www.degustation-whisky.com).

Before the tasting started, 800 glasses of whisky had been poured out. Four whiskies, ranging from mild to peaty, were offered: Dalwhinnie, Glenkinchie, Cragganmore, and Talisker. Julian’s presentation included many fascinating details of the whisky-distilling process and by the time it concluded the assembled guests were keen to sample the end product. Julian was available throughout the event to enable guests to benefit from his encyclopædic knowledge of both whisky and rugby, which he turned out to have played for a number of French teams.

Judging by the reluctance of some guests to depart, the event appears to have been a great success. Thanks are due both to Julian for his presentation and to Diageo which sponsored the event.
