Cocktail-themed dinner dance raises cash for children’s charity

The Faculty of Actuaries Students’ Society (FASS) held its annual dinner dance at the George Hotel in Edinburgh on 5 November 2009. The event proved hugely popular and was attended by over 140 actuarial students and Heriot-Watt University students. The evening was an excellent networking opportunity for all and demonstrated that being an actuarial student isn’t only about exams and hard work!

With cocktail-themed tables, the tone of the evening was set from the start. An excellent three-course meal was served, followed by an equally impressive after- dinner speech from the newly appointed 2009/10 FASS president Suzanne Vaughan. The charity prize draw followed shortly afterwards, with top prizes including a Nintendo DS and a DAB Digital Radio and iPod. FASS raised over £1 100 for Children 1st, a charity which helps disadvantaged children in Scotland.

The remainder of the evening involved cheesy music and a lot of dodgy dance moves, proving that it’s not only your dad that can embarrass you on the dance floor, but also fellow colleagues. For those with the forethought to book the following day as a ‘study day’, the evening continued into the early hours of the morning, concluding only after the bar staff left. Whether much studying was attempted the following day is debatable. FASS would like to thank everyone who attended the dinner for their continuing support and also the companies that kindly donated to the prize draw.
