Actuary of the Future: Satinder Singh Sohel

Date entered profession?
December 2006.

Employer and area of work?
Chaucer Syndicates, reserving actuary in general insurance.

Describe yourself in three words.
Energetic, random and enthusiastic.

What is the best thing about your job?
The good mix of people at work, and the challenge and variety in what I do.

And the worst?
Spreadsheets and sitting in front of the monitor for hours on end. I need to stretch my legs every so often.

Study day sleeper or shopper?
Sleeper — and in case my bosses are reading — followed closely by some studying.

Tell us your formula for success.
I will let you know when, or if, I become successful — however, always believe you can succeed.

What is your best attribute?
My ‘try anything’ attitude. How will you know you are good at something unless you try it?

Your worst habit?
Not being able to say ‘no’.

What is most likely to irritate you about others?
I do not easily get annoyed but using text-speak in e-mails is irritating.

Alternative career?
I was always told I would be a good teacher.

How do you relax away from the office?
I usually just go out with friends, watch a movie or play some sport — and stay well away from any study material.

Tell us something unusual about yourself.
I am fascinated by anything paranormal. I used to sit around for hours with friends and exchange scary stories and, in the process, scare ourselves half to death. Unfortunately, nothing spooky has ever happened to me, yet…

Who would you most like to be stuck in a lift with?
A black cab driver, because they usually have many tales to tell.
