Russian splendour at the SIAS ball

After an exciting actuarial year, over 550 people attended SIAS’ showpiece event, the annual dinner on Friday 27 November 2009. The event was held in Billingsgate Vaults and guests were taken back in time to our Russian palace and all the drama of the Revolution.

The evening began with a reception in the setting of the Siberian forest, with entertainment including a juggler and a magician. We were then ushered into the lavishly decorated Great Hall for dinner, where a great feast was served and enjoyed by all.

Following the meal, a curtain was drawn revealing stairs leading down to the dance floor. The band played for the remainder of the night as actuaries danced and drank the year away. Those who remained in the hall upstairs were treated to a chocolate fountain.

The evening wound down around midnight and most guests departed. However, for many, the night did not end there — an after-party was arranged at a nearby bar. 2009 was a great year for me as social convenor for the Society. Iain Ritchie will be taking over in 2010. Thanks to everyone who helped organise last year’s events. Here’s to the year ahead!
