Cass and the science of pensions

The Cass Business School is to launch what it says is the world’s first-ever postgraduate masters programme designed for a career in the pensions industry.

Professor David Blake, director of the Pensions Institute at Cass, said the school aims to produce a new class of professional, the pension scientist. ‘Countries around the globe are fast waking up to the fact they have a major challenge on their hands with their state-run pension schemes’, he explained. ‘At the same time, many private sector schemes are facing severe funding difficulties as a result of poor stockmarket returns and increasing longevity. What is clearly needed is a well-trained group of professionals capable of providing appropriate and sustainable pensions solutions to a highly complex problem.’

The MSc will be unique, said the school, because it will take a multidisciplinary approach to pensions, drawing from the fields of economics, finance, actuarial science, accounting, law, and corporate governance. The first course starts in September.
