Appointments and moves

After three years as appointed actuary and chief financial officer at Birla Sun Life Insurance, the second-largest private life insurer in India, Pete Akers has moved up to the role of chief operating officer, where he will focus on preparing the organisation for its next stage of expansion.

Anthony Bice has left Tillinghast-Towers Perrin to join Mercer Oliver Wyman in its life insurance advisory practice.

Alastair Hunter has been appointed head of the retirement practice and a member of the UK executive committee at Mercer Human Resource Consulting. His appointment was effective from 31 March, when he took over from Bruce Rigby, who assumed his new position as head of Mercer’s global retirement practice. Mr Hunter was previously head of Mercer’s international consulting practice. He is past chairman of the International Employee Benefits Association.

Steven Mendel has joined Barclays as business development director for wealth solutions, the business unit that meets the needs of all the bank’s customers in investment and protection. Steven has responsibility for product architecture, development, and management of customer propositions, product development, and marketing. He was previously an associate partner with McKinsey & Company.

Babloo Ramamurthy is stepping up to become managing partner of Watson Wyatt based in London. He is succeeding Alan Whalley who will transfer to Washington to become the firm’s US regional manager.
