The Gherkin plays host to SAAX

The iconic ‘Gherkin’ building in London was the scene of the latest Southern African Actuarial ConneXion (SAAX) event held on the evening of Monday 25 January. Amid the drinks and chatter, it was difficult not to notice the tall figure of our speaker for the night, Jim Sutcliffe. Jim is currently the chair of the Board for Actuarial Standards and is a non-executive director of Lonmin plc. He was formerly group CEO of Old Mutual and chief executive of Prudential UK.

Throughout the evening Jim regaled us with tales of the many experiences that had shaped his life spanning South Africa, the Netherlands, Canada, the US and the UK. Never short of an anecdote, his frank manner of speaking had us both enthralled and in fits of laughter. Many thanks to Jim for his time and entertainment value, as he skilfully guided us from actuarial topics to platinum mining.

Join us for the next event in April, which is not to be missed. Details will appear on our website shortly. If you work with someone from ‘Southern Africa’, liberally defined as sub-equatorial, please spread the word.

The SAAX Group committee consists of: Adele Groyer, Adrian Baskir, Coenraad de Bruin, Greg Solomon, Marjorie Ngwenya and Sonja Uys. Our thanks go to Swiss Re for part-sponsorship and for providing us with a memorable venue. All Southern Africans — for further information on or to join this group, please visit www.saaxgroup.org or www.the-actuary.org.uk/873080 for further information.
