SIAS pool competition

SIAS pool competitionThe ever popular pool competition took place on Thursday 29 January and was a great success, with 30 teams battling it out for supremacy at the Pool Shack in Victoria.

The competition began with teams being split into groups, allowing people time to familiarise themselves again with the cue. However, it wasn’t long before the action hotted up with the rule book being brought into question on many occasions – typical actuaries!

A short break followed the group stages allowing competitors some time to recharge and indulge in the buffet, which proved to be as popular as the pool itself! With the evening now in full flow, teams progressed through to the knockout stages of either the Plate or Cup competition. With too many Steve Davises on show, play continued on well into the evening with finals only getting under way at 11 o’clock. In the final of the Plate, ‘Pool Idols’ Sean Greensmith and Matthew Parish proved too strong for ‘Cornhill Z’.

The Cup final proved to be more of a tense affair with last year’s winners ‘Cornhill X’, a defensive pairing of David Corkett and Mark Porter, taking on the mighty newcomers ‘Black Tie Bandits’. Cornhill X took substantial leads in both the first two frames but they were not enough to defeat the quick-fire breaks produced by Mark Allan and Adrian Gibbs – this year’s worthy winners!
